About Me

For nearly 30 years I have enjoyed music, both playing records and then eventually writing and recording my own. I opened up my first studio out of my Fathers house and started recording both on the road an mobile for several years.

Then I had my own bands and became Producer\Engineer for both bands I was in over that stretch and loved every minute of it. In 2000 I opened up SG Recording Studios out of my own home and spent the next 9 years recording, dealing with producers and record labels and working with some of the best unknown musicians in the Chicago area.

In 2010 I suffered a bad reaction to medication that took 80% of my voice leaving me completely unable to sing. I was devastated and have spent the last 6 years going to doctors for a solution. However, it did leave me with a very clear, low volume speaking voice that has allowed me to create training video showing others how I do things in my home studio, hoping it proves helpful to those just getting started.

Johnny,
Thanks so much for this great site. I am brand new int digital recording and one of your setup videos saved my life :-) (arming an input so my mic actually worked) and then the "One and only Love" video really helped me understand what is possible. I would like to work through the videos but wonder if you have a recommended beginner track. Also, I see mixing videos and assume they are part of this, but wondering if there is anything devoted to the front end, recording. Again, just looking for a recommended beginner path. May reach out to you at some point for personal help, will look on your website to find the process/cost.
Thanks,
Bob Baird

Sucks getting old-ER ... LOL but guess we all get there sooner or later, not to imply you're old but voices change with age too. I struggle hard, Have to use a capo to find a comfy range to sing and I'm still (DEEP)
And yeh I just about have to learn how to speak too, I think gravity took my jaw down with my reaar end :)

Thanks man! I don't have any recorded vocal tracks over the sample based beat, but I could still send it to you. Would you still be able to make a poignant video without the lyricist on the song?

Thank for all your help Johnny. Watching one video saves hours of reading and scratching my head.

Yeah, the mix is going smooth. Real smooth. I did some voice correction with both S1's tuner and Melodyne so you could see how both work. You wouldn't happen to have the back up vocals on separate track, would ya?
