The Presonus Faderport 8 - Feel and Hear What You Mix

Posted by Johnny Geib on December 8, 2016 at 4:00 PM

The Faderport 8 has been a dream of mine since I bought the original faderport nearly 8 years ago. There have been all sorts of Photo-Shopped wishes created by myself and others, never really thinking Presonus was actually listening. One thing I have learned over the years is that development of devices like these is not an easy process and coming up with features "Everyone" will like is even harder.

When the announcement of the Faderport 8 was made I was ecstatic and couldn't wait to see what was coming. I was fortunate enough to borrow a unit to do a series of videos that are now available here at HST. http://www.homestudiotrainer.com/apps/videos/channels/show/4249676-faderport-8 Please feel free to check them out and decide for yourself if this is something that can help you with your workflow using Studio One.

8 touch sensitive faders, the ability to adjust effect settings with the faders themselves, a Fader-Flip option that brings all the Pan settings to the faders, a beautiful LCD for each track that can show everything from VU levels to Gate and Compression response and soft touch jell buttons for super quiet operation during tracking. Knowing Presonus there is more coming but for now, it is about as complete as I need for how I work in my Studio.

I hope to purchase my own after the holidays but am glad for the opportunity to work with one and share what I have discovered in this awesome machine as I feel it will lend the touch of the "Old Days" when you used to be able to feel and hear what you are mixing.

I would love to get one as well because I like the idea of hands on mixing Enjoying your video series. I have a question however, I don't think I have room on my Mac book pro to plug it...I only have 2 USB ports. I am new to studio one and computer recording What would be the answer for someone needing to use several USB ports for monitors, controllers, interface and the Faderport? Please forgive my inexperience and I would appreciate your help.

Hey Johnny,
I did in fact check Sweetwater, and YES they have a 36 month no interest payment thing for the Faderport 8. $15.00 per month for 36 months. And of course one can always pay off the balance in full. I'm working on selling my Fishman Loudbox Amp as I do not use it at all anymore. Can't play out due to health stuff so since it was for the purpose of NOT buying a full PA system, I no longer need it. Sell it, catch up the over due bills because of delay of start up of new job, and then I will definitely do the 36 month thing. While I love Studio One DAW, I still much prefer the feel of a real mix console. I just think better when I have both my Paws on the hardware making edits and adjustments.
Just thought you might want to pass this info re: Sweetwater along in your facebook pages as well as here.
Question though...will Faderport 8 work with Studio One Artist? Or is it strictly for pro?
Question: for recording live How do I set up Faderport 8 for auto punch?
I'm looking forward to your video on doing automation. For "Writing" automation nothing beats a console/faders for accuracy. I've tried drawing as I go with a mouse and it ain't happening, at least for me. Kind of like trying to sign one's signature with a mouse...just doesn't work. At least not for me.
Have a good weekend.

I would recommend a 4 port USB Hub. This would give you more USB ports and a bit more freedom for devices. Make sure it is a POWERED hub that plugs into the wall as well/

The Faderport looks awesome! I have an Avid Artist Mix, but the Eucon platform is super clunky and never connects properly to Pro Tools. I have to check this one out! Agree that the touch of the "old days" is super important!

Thanks for sharing!

Hey Johnny,,,, I have gone ahead and ordered an FP 8. Wondering if you have to use USB 2? Will USB 3 work??? I would assume so. But,, also, what is this Firewire download? Would it not be better than USB 2?? Thanks much! (Its nice knowing you might be available to help the ignorant,,,ME. Or should I say 'the less experienced'. Thanks again,,,,,,,,,,, Mike
